Parking in Istria: Pula, Rovinj, Poreč and Rijeka Without Unnecessary Fines

Parking in Istria is one of the things worth sorting out in advance during summer. In Pula, Rovinj, Poreč and Rijeka, the centre is often divided into paid zones, spaces close to the historic centre fill up quickly and a poorly parked car can end up with a fine or being towed away. Croatians take this very seriously.
Basic Rules for Avoiding a Fine
Before leaving your car, check four things:
- Whether you are parked in a legal parking space. A blue line usually means paid parking. Avoid yellow markings, entrances, pavements, pedestrian crossings and residential spaces.
- Whether you have paid for the correct zone. In some towns, the difference between streets can matter even within just a few metres.
- Whether you have entered the vehicle registration number correctly. Checks are often carried out using licence plates. A mistake in one digit can cause a problem.
- Whether parking is valid at that time. In summer, paid parking often applies for longer hours than outside the season.
Parking in Pula

In the summer period from 1 June to 30 September, parking in Pula is paid in all zones every day from 7:00 to 23:00. The Karolina car park operates 24 hours a day in summer.

For visiting the amphitheatre, the most practical option is the Karolina car park because it is located right next to the Arena. For a longer visit to the city, it is usually more reasonable to park outside the very centre and walk.
Parking in Rovinj
- Do not drive into the historic centre.
- Look for a municipal car park outside the old town.
- In the high season, arrive in the morning or later in the afternoon.
- Expect a 10-20 minute walk.
- Check in advance whether your apartment has private parking.
In summer, car parks near the centre fill up quickly. If you are staying in an apartment without a parking space, sort out parking before arrival, not after arriving in a narrow street.

The Poreč tourist portal states that open car parks are divided into red, yellow and green zones and that parking control is carried out by the company Usluga Poreč. If a driver does not pay in advance, they may be issued a daily parking ticket. The best option is to park in the wider area around the centre and walk.
